«Welcome to the fourth edition of the TIP Book! The Tufts Career Center is excited to provide you with internship profiles packed with helpful advice ...»

-- [ Page 7 ] --

Research internships are great opportunities to gain practical knowledge and experience. Be sure to take advantage of everything the hospital or company you work with offers. For example, while at Brigham and Women's, I had the opportunity to take a free phlebotomy class and an IRB (Institutional Review Board) training. Also, use your time at your internship site to network professionally because other opportunities may come your way as a result.

About the Organization Brigham and Women's Hospital, Department of Rheumatology Boston, MA In addition to the full development of basic research in areas relevant to rheumatic and allergic diseases, translational research and clinical research at the population level and patient therapeutics, the Division has also organized and integrated much of its research to provide interdisciplinary progress in several key human diseases. Thus, we have developed focused centers in RA, Lupus, and Asthma and Allergic Diseases. In each of these Centers, extensive interaction between basic researchers and clinical research are fostered and include the integration of research in animal models with research in patients and patient registries. The Centers stand as the most developed examples of comprehensive interdisciplinary translational research.

Brigham and Women's Hospital, Epilepsy Division | www.brighamandwomens.org  Ava Sanayei (Biomedical Engineering, 2016)  Neurology Research Trainee  Full-time, 40 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

My main task was to assist with two clinical research studies in the epilepsy division. The main study involved monitoring psychiatric symptoms of patients in the epilepsy monitoring unit. This involved both inpatient and outpatient daily assessments, which provided me with the opportunity to interact with patients one-on-one. Throughout the internship, I modified the assessment program as needed (making improvements) and performed data analysis. Additionally, I regularly attended lectures, epilepsy journal club, and the neurosurgery conference. I shadowed epilepsy rounds several times, where the physicians taught me about reading EEGs.

How did you find your internship?

I met a doctor at Brigham and Women's through a connection with a family member. Several months later, she reached out to me about starting clinical research with members of her team in the spring, which ended up being extended into the summer.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

During my internship, I was able to shadow two brain surgeries. They were both brain resections to potentially cure focal epilepsy.

What do you find challenging?

The work was very independent and required me to fill a lot of time with things I thought were beneficial to the project. While my supervisors gave me guidance and checked in with me regularly, they were very busy people, so it required a fair amount of independence.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Contact several specific doctors in a field that interests you. A couple other doctors took on research trainees similar to me without any connections, so with persistence, it is possible to find a similar opportunity.

I tune robots to prepare them for being sent out to customers, which involves a solid amount of MatLab, bode plot interpretation, and more.

How did you find your internship?

Through ZipRecruiter What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy the fairly flexible hours combined with the clear, goal-oriented tasks What do you find challenging?

It can be challenging to complete a large task with occasional or limited supervision.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

I would take every task they give you as an opportunity to learn whether or not it is something you would like to do again later in life.

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I organized a patient and staff satisfaction survey project to collect data for a grant application. I designed the surveys, administered them, and then recorded and analyzed the data. I also conducted patient phone interviews about interactions with Brookside's community resource specialists. Besides this main project, I updated and managed the family services patient database and shadowed different medical providers for a few hours each week.

How did you find your internship?

I found it through the Community Health internship database.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I really loved feeling like a part of the team at the health center. I was able to attend family services team meetings and interact directly with patients through the interviews, surveys, and shadowing. I also felt like my project was useful, which was important to me.

What do you find challenging?

This was my first real experience with Dominican Spanish, so at times it was difficult to understand the patients, but this was definitely a good challenge.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Contact people, and if they don't respond, don't be afraid to send a follow-up email. If you're interested in interning at Brookside, feel free to contact me!

Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Plant Biology | https://dpb.carnegiescience.edu  Zoe Greene (Biology, 2016)  Research Assistant  Full-time, 40 hours per week  Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

After I mastered certain lab tasks under the guidance of my two mentors, I started to gather results for a project that culminated in a research poster presentation. Each week there was a seminar that featured talks by leading scientists in the field.

How did you find your internship?

I found the internship on the department's website (it is affiliated with Stanford University). I then contacted the P.I. directly to learn more about the work the lab does.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoyed getting to know and learn from scientists from all around the world. I was treated as a full member of the lab and encouraged to contribute my ideas at lab meetings. I also felt completely immersed in the scientific process.

What do you find challenging?

My mentors challenged me to push myself as a scientist and gain a deeper understanding of the procedures so that I wouldn't be doing things by rote. I learned so much about the intricacies of photosynthesis in such a short period of time.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Get in contact with the professors as early as possible. There may not be funding opportunities depending on the lab, so it gives time to apply for a grant if need be. I was also able to receive a Tufts Biology 93/94 credit for my internship.

About the Organization Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Plant Biology Stanford, CA Our quest is to unlock the mysteries of plant life, organisms that constitute the foundation for all life on Earth. We investigate how sunlight is absorbed and used by plants to produce biomass, how inorganic nutrients are captured and converted into organic matter using the energy from light, how single cells and the plant body are formed, how the environment shapes plant growth and development above and below ground and, in turn, how plants interact with and shape the environment. We focus on extending knowledge of fundamental biological mechanisms critical for plant growth and development through basic research. This knowledge will serve as a foundation for solving problems faced by agriculture, the environment, and medicine and for developing practices that enable global sustainability.

Carney Hospital | www.carneyhospital.org  Jessica Mar (Community Health, Asian American Studies Minor, 2018)  Market Manager  Full-time, About 35 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am in charge of organizing farmers on the day that the Farmer's Market is open. I am responsible for being on-site during the operation of the market to ensure that all transactions between the customers and vendors run smoothly.

How did you find your internship?

I went to a talk where a Tufts alumni discussed his work at Carney Hospital where he sees a highly underserved population. He mentioned that one of his colleagues was working on bringing a Farmer's Market to the hospital so that the community could have access to fresh and healthy foods.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy being able to actually see how happy patients at the hospital are when they buy fresh fruits and vegetables for their family. I feel that I am making a difference in eliminating difficulties for this community to have access to healthy, unprocessed food.

What do you find challenging?

I find that coordinating with hospital administration can be challenging. It can be discouraging when I want to incorporate something new at the market that many people seem to enjoy, but cannot because the administration fears liability for its patients.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Always communicate with your supervisor, especially when you are unsure about something. They will work with you to make sure you have a pleasant experience in leadership.

Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) | cliniclegal.org  Lorenza Ramirez (International Relations, Italian, 2018)  Public Policy & Advocacy Intern; Full-time, 40 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I compared the language and requirements in all the state tuition equity laws, created a model language, and designed an infographic to educate others on the issue; wrote a four-part blog series for the CLINIC website about the need for more immigration legal service providers for immigrants in the Southeastern United States; and took a six-week intensive e-learning course on the "Comprehensive Overview of Immigration Law" offered by CLINIC.

How did you find your internship?

Online What do you enjoy most about your internship?

My supervisor and the organization gave me a lot of independence to pursue my projects. For example, given my interest in graphic design, they allowed me to create infographics (and gave me lots of helpful feedback in the process). My supervisor also gave me lots of flexibility to engage with the D.C.
