«Welcome to the fourth edition of the TIP Book! The Tufts Career Center is excited to provide you with internship profiles packed with helpful advice ...»

-- [ Page 28 ] --

Most of the work is focused and built around racial equity. There are aspects of this internship that can be personally challenging if you are not ready to talk about race and racism. However, the racial identity development I have undergone is one of my most valuable takeaways. Additionally, because SJPHC is a bilingual health center, communicating with patients in Spanish has been somewhat difficult at times, but most people are very understanding if you are not a fluent speaker.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Come ready to talk about race and structural racism and to actually do the work. The work can be emotionally and mentally taxing, but working at the HPC is extremely rewarding and valuable to any career you want to pursue. To make the most of your time, you have to have a deep passion for health equity and a fierce motivation to get the work done, even if it consists of simple tasks.

About the Organization Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center; Jamaica Plain, MA SJPHC is a community health center licensed by Brigham and Women's Hospital. The Health Promotion Center (HPC) mission is to provide personal, quality health care with respect and compassion to our diverse community.

• Rose Murray (Mechanical Engineering, 2017)

• Engineering Design Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid; they also provide housing for interns What do you do as an intern at this organization?

It’s a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing building systems firm, so most of what I did revolved around designing those systems. I worked a lot in CAD and Revit, designing mechanical piping and duct systems.

The internship program is pretty well-organized, so all the interns go through weekly trainings about all aspects of the company, such as engineering, estimating, project management, marketing, etc.

How did you find your internship?Friend referral

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I learned a ton. I worked on cool projects like DC museums, data centers, and the new Atlanta Falcons Stadium. Overall it’s a really social work environment, which makes the summer fun. There's a companywide cornhole tournament, weekly cookouts, and rarely does a week go by without at least one scheduled happy hour.

What do you find challenging?

I came into the internship knowing nothing about mechanical construction, so there was definitely a learning curve. Also, the work itself was pretty challenging.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Make contact ASAP. The info about who to contact is on their website under careers. They have multiple divisions, so find out where you would want to be and then aggressively pursue whomever the contact person is for that office.

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern, I manage and help write much of the content that gets pushed to the website. I also generally manage campaigns via emails, tradeshows, webinars, etc. that create leads for the sales teams.

Jumbo Jobs What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Sqrrl couples a higher level of responsibility with flexible hours and good pay. Plus, even though many of my tasks are independent, the managing staff makes sure that I learn the fundamentals of marketing.

What do you find challenging?

Time management and research into how to perform a task is 100% on me as an employee. If you need someone to tell you what to do, when to do it, or how to do it, you might need to step your game up.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be humble and understand that a good deal of stuff might be "outside your job description" and you should learn how to do it, do it effectively, then move on. I think Sqrrl takes rolling applications.

State Street Corporation | www.statestreet.com

• Matthew Bogen (Economics, 2016)

• State Street IT Trainee

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I perform the initial work on short and medium-term projects to support the department, including getting applications ready for business users and maintaining a central database of application support information.

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship through a referral. A family friend forwarded my resume to a colleague at the company, and shortly thereafter I had a phone conversation to discuss the summer opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I love the education in the role. As I branched into different projects for the team, I've learned SQL, information about how IT functions within the larger company, the company culture, and what it's like to be in a traditional 9-5 job.

What do you find challenging?

The hardest part of the internship is learning how to use 'downtime' effectively. Interns do not have constant work. A key part of having a productive internship is learning how to occupy your time -- either by continually educating oneself through online tutorials, developing additional skills, or finding new projects to support.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Find out in advance which projects are available for you to work on. Arrange a weekly meeting with your manager to ensure regular feedback on your performance and to discuss your workload. If you aren't proactive about talking to your manager, you'll be stuck with nothing to do.

• Client Relationship Management Support and Data Analyst Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

How did you find your internship?

Family referral What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoyed working with a team and managing responsibilities that had a tangible effect on the organization as a whole. I also loved being in the middle of Boston every day. I had a blast going out to lunch most days and meeting many people.

What do you find challenging?

Working at a computer all day was not something I was used to doing, so at first the days were long. But after a couple weeks of adapting, I felt much better conditioned and the days began to fly by.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

If someone wants to make the most of an internship program like the one I just completed at State Street, my one piece of advice would be to network frequently and with as many people as possible while you are there. You never know who you'll meet at such a big and exciting organization.

What do you find challenging?

Transitioning from a college schedule to a full-time work schedule can be difficult.

Always be eager to do the projects and tasks you are given. Be curious. Ask thoughtful questions (not questions you can find the answer to on Google).

Tufts Career Fair What do you enjoy most about your internship?

SurveyMonkey has a very friendly and relaxed office culture. The projects I got to work on had a direct impact on the business and provided many opportunities to learn.

What do you find challenging?

Understanding the development process and the various technologies involved took some time, because I had never worked with anything at this scale before.

Learn as much as you can about the services and technology that powers the product. It will not only make you feel more comfortable about your work during the internship, but also give you knowledge you can take elsewhere.

TED Conferences, LLC | www.ted.com

• Alexa Horwitz (Interdisciplinary Studies, 2016)

• Content Team Intern

• Part-time, 25 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern on the content team, I am the first set of eyes to review potential speakers' applications that are received through the online portal. I categorize them and enter them into the TED database based on their interests. Also, I can flag people who I think would give a compelling talk and pitch them at our weekly meetings.

How did you find your internship?

I love watching TED talks, so when it came time to look for a summer internship, I checked out their available positions. I uploaded my resume and submitted my cover letter through the website and was contacted by current employees for several rounds of interviews. It was kind of a long process from when I first applied to receiving the offer, but it was definitely worth the wait!

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I really enjoy how my time is balanced between working individually and working within a larger group. I am able to do my own research and learn more about what I am interested in, but we all come together a few times a week as a content team to update the group and learn more about what each other are doing. It was during these meetings that I learned from my supervisors and received feedback on my work.
