Small Army | www.smallarmy.net

• Catherine Armistead (Engineering Psychology, Studio Art - Dual Degree with SMFA, 2017)

• Creative Intern

• Full-time, 30 hours per week

• Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I shadow the design projects of the agency (website design, infographic, logo works) and sit in on concept meetings and conference calls.

How did you find your internship?

Referral from an SMFA professor What do you enjoy most about your internship?

The agency is a really fun, engaging, busy place to work. Everyone is excited about their projects and there's a great balance of working hard but also laughing and having fun.

What do you find challenging?

As the only creative intern, there was a steep learning curve - but as a result I've gotten much better with the adobe suite and general design principles.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Reach out early in the school year and bring a hard copy of your portfolio to the interview. I interviewed in January for a summer internship.

About the Organization Small Army Boston, MA We consider ourselves professional storytellers but the industry we reside in is called advertising. We don't believe advertising works anymore and that building campaigns off of key messages is outdated.

We believe that when a person receives over 3,000 messages a day that odds are, they're not paying attention to you. We believe that marketing is about sharing stories and creating relationships. It's about creating a conversation and arming people with the story about you that resonates with them. As a result, they want to share it with their friends. So we're an ad agency but we're really not. We have been sharpening our storytelling skills for confident brands since 2002. We are listed as one of the New England's top ad agencies by the Boston Business Journal, and were recently recognized as one of Boston's top 10 small/hi-growth businesses by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. We're a fullservice agency with about 30 employees, and do our thing at the historic Horticultural Hall in Boston (300 Massachusetts Avenue). We love hosting visitors, so come by to say "hi" and check out our space when you get a chance.

I wrote six articles and a children's book called Potato the Pig Visits the Museum, which another intern, Yenny Martin, illustrated. The book will educate field trip groups of children ages 3-6 on how to behave in a museum. The articles focus on recent activities that OMFR staff have completed.

How did you find your internship?

Liberal Arts Career Network. I encourage everybody to apply to this internship, as my former supervisors are specifically seeking Tufts students!

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

My supervisors! They were amazing. They encouraged us to network, explore the Smithsonian during the work day, and hold ambitious goals.

What do you find challenging?

Writer's block -- knowing when to abandon a topic and begin pursuing a new one.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Take initiative. Never wait for your supervisor to hand you your next project. Also, take full advantage of opportunities to network and participate in behind-the-scenes tours.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum | www.guggenheim.org

• Emily Gruzdowich (Art History, Political Science, 2017)

• Institutional Development Intern

• Full-time, 35-40 hours per week hours per week

• Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant and $500 stipend provided by the Museum What do you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern in Institutional Development, I perform prospect research, draft letters of interest, grant reports and applications, compile relevant statistics, interface with other museum departments to collect relevant information, and staff Museum events.

How did you find your internship?

After conducting a series of informational interviews with arts professionals, I decided to apply for museum-based internships in New York. Individually, I conducted copious amounts of preliminary research to tailor my cover letters to each organization.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I appreciate the diversity of my daily tasks and the collaborative environment in which I work. By interfacing with various museum departments, I gain invaluable exposure to the workings of the museum and the professionals that staff it.

What do you find challenging?

The freeform nature of my internship proves challenging at times. I regularly reprioritize my schedule to complete urgent tasks and often encounter delays when gathering information from multiple departments. Communication with my supervisor is vital to completing tasks in a timely manner.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be proactive. Actively work to acquire a diverse and marketable skillset and leverage your connections when possible. Museum internships are in high demand, which causes undergraduates to compete with graduate students for unpaid positions. The Guggenheim’s deadline is in late January.

About the OrganizationSolomon R. Guggenheim MuseumNew York, NY

Looking to the future, the Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that take contemporary art, architecture, and design beyond the walls of the museum.

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

Patient services refers to all aspects of the health center excluding clinical care. I was responsible for verifying and registering patients for MassHealth insurance, coordinating referrals for specialists, and quality assurance. The other half of the internship involved protocol analyst work to improve diabetes and mammogram screening.

How did you find your internship?

I emailed the head of HR and asked to work at the center.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

My supervisors acknowledged my strong analytical skills and gave me projects to work on independently that allowed me to use critical thinking skills-- this was not a paper-pushing type of position.

What do you find challenging?

A community health center is often understaffed and underfunded. For me, this meant that my supervisor and coworkers rarely had time to train or walk me through things, so there was a lot of learning on the job.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Apply or ask around early. I began my search in March so that I would be at the top of the pile for the places I applied to (instead of waiting until May).

How did you find your internship?

I heard about the position from friends who have interned here in the past.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I appreciate working alongside providers who are passionate about racial justice and health equity in the community that I grew up in. I have developed and strengthened multiple skills because it is a multifaceted position.

What do you find challenging?

I have not found anything particularly challenging because I am from this community and am also bilingual (English and Spanish). The team I worked with this summer has worked really well together.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be willing and open to learning and pushing yourself. This is a race-explicit organization that will shift the lens through which you look at problems, no matter where you are coming from.

I administer the Health Promotion Center programming, consisting of a wide range of exercise, nutrition, mental health, and community programs for SJPHC patients and members of the surrounding community. Additionally, I am a case manager for the JP Fit program, which helps connect overweight or obese pediatric patients to YMCA scholarships, nutritionist appointments, and exercise programs. I am also developing multiple curricula for the Health Promotion Center to be used in various sexual health workshops in the Boston area and for our own programming. I also volunteer at the South Street Youth Center once a week to assist with teen summer programming. This summer, I helped launch a new program called the Girls Empowered League for adolescent girls. It is an exercise group that partakes in biweekly workshops and discussions on issues of sexual health, self defense, bullying, and more.

How did you find your internship?

My T.A. for CH 1 told me about her experience as a Health Promotion Center intern. Later, my supervisor gave a Health Equity & Racial Justice Framing training to one of my classes and we connected.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I value the connections I made with patients who spent a great amount of time in the Health Promotion Center. The HPC is a phenomenal community space, and I love working in this productive and energetic environment. I also enjoyed the curriculum development for the Girls Empowered League and teaching sexual health lessons to the participants.
