• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am working to increase traffic to the Intelligent Operations Exchange (IOX), a crowdsourcing platform built by the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence and Genpact, a former General Electric division and global leader in business operations. My role is to research individuals, conferences, and companies interested in or working on technologies, such as virtual reality, rapid automation, and machine learning, and invite them to participate.

How did you find your internship?Jumbo Jobs

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy the opportunity to learn about new and emerging technologies, as well as the chance to work with MIT graduate students and staff. Additionally, the view from my 15th-floor office of the Charles and downtown Boston is really stunning!

What do you find challenging?

There are only two people in the CCI working on this project: me and my boss. So it can be challenging to think about how much work needs to get done by the end of the summer by basically just myself.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be willing to think outside the box. I searched Jumbo Jobs high and low for an entire semester before I found this, and applied on a whim. Turns out, it's incredible.

About the Organization MIT Center for Collective Intellience Cambridge, MA While people have talked about collective intelligence for decades, new communication technologies— especially the Internet—now allow huge numbers of people all over the planet to work together in new ways. The successes of systems like Google and Wikipedia suggest that the time is now ripe for many more such systems, and the goal of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence is to understand how to take advantage of these possibilities. Our basic research question is: How can people and computers be connected so that—collectively—they act more intelligently than any person, group, or computer has ever done before?

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern, I worked closely with the research and design teams on both internal and external projects, studying the user experience design process. Research included working with the team during usability tests and analyzing the resulting data, while design included wire framing and site mapping. In addition, I contributed to the company's marketing plan. At the end of the summer, I finished up my internship by creating a portfolio piece that pulled together my research and design skills into a self-driven project.

How did you find your internship?

I found Motivate Design through LinkedIn and reached out to their Business Partnerships Lead about internship opportunities.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

What I loved most about my internship was that I had the opportunity to work in all aspects of user experience design, from research to testing to early prototyping. In addition, I had the opportunity to work on projects with a range of clients in industries including pharmaceutical, social networking, and food and beverage. Lastly, I found everyone in the office to be super welcoming, approachable, and really interested in what I wanted to learn more about.

What do you find challenging?

What I found most challenging was keeping up with all the projects that were going on in the office at one time, especially because I wanted to work on almost every single one.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

While you can work primarily with either the research or design team, I would advise you to keep an open mind and try working with both. You'll get to see projects from start to finish, which will give you a more comprehensive understanding of the user experience design process. Also, since there are so many great projects to work on with tons of different clients, I would definitely suggest speaking up if there's a particular project you'd like to work on.

Mount Sinai Hospital | www.mountsinai.org  Anonymous (Community Health, Clinical Psychology, 2018)  Research Assistant  Full-time, 35 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I worked as a research assistant for the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center. I reviewed research articles, created citations, made phone calls to set up meetings, facilitated discussions and created drafts and documents in preparation for the filming of outreach videos.

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship through Google; a quick search for health-related internships in NYC led me to the Mount Sinai website.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoyed my interactions with community members and how I was able to facilitate conversations at our discussion meetings.

What do you find challenging?

It was challenging to accomplish everything that was planned at the start of the internship. There were outside factors that often interfered with plans, such as IRB approval, funding and time restrictions.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

To make the most of the internship, one should be comfortable with independent work, communicating with community members, and working with others.

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am working on the Recreation Flagging project. The goal of the project is to create a model to predict real-time bacteria levels for the benefit of swimmers and boaters. I spend the mornings collecting water samples from six locations in the watershed. Then I go to the Tufts engineering lab to analyze the samples for bacteria. Afterward, I go to the MyRWA office to do turbidity analysis on the samples and to input and organize the data.

How did you find your internship?

I heard about MyRWA from another environmental engineer who had interned with them last summer.

Also, my advisor sent us an email about the open position.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I love that I get to spend the mornings outside and that I don't spend my entire day behind a desk. The internship is an enjoyable combination of fieldwork, lab work, and office work.

What do you find challenging?

I am the only intern working on this project, so the full responsibility is on me. I have to figure things out on my own, such as when problems arise in the lab and managing the data with the software. However, my superiors are really supportive and always willing to help me, which is great.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be persistent after you submit your application. My superiors told me they liked how I kept contacting them for updates on my status. Also, don't hesitate to ask the other employees questions; they are all so knowledgeable. I've learned so much by asking random questions during morning sampling, whether it be environmentally-related or not.

Nano Catalysis and Energy Laboratory, Tufts University | http://ase.tufts.edu/nano-cel  Sylvia Lustig (Chemical Engineering, Music minor, 2017)  Research Assistant  Full-time, approximately 35 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Tufts Summer Scholars grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I research the efficiency of metal catalysts for the dehydrogenation of alcohols. My daily work consists of synthesizing copper nanoparticles and alloying them with platinum or palladium. I test the catalysts in a reactor and analyze mass spec data to determine activity and selectivity.

How did you find your internship?

I emailed Professor Stephanopoulos in December expressing interest in her research. I asked to work in her lab during the summer and she suggested that I begin in January for credit and apply for summer funding via Summer Scholars or the chemical engineering departmental scholarship.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

My research feels like a combination of cooking and potions. My favorite part is the catalyst synthesis because it’s stereotypical chemistry in real life: bubbling solutions, changing colors, etc. I love that I can turn cooking into research that is advancing sustainable energy development.

What do you find challenging?

Building a sense of community in the lab is challenging. There are other PhD students and post -docs, but we are all working on our own projects and I am the only unde rgraduate. It is also hard to communicate due to a significant language barrier, but I know that it is an important skill to master.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Reach out early to a professor and don’t be afraid to send a cold email with a resume expressing interest in their research and asking about opportunities to work with them. Don’t feel like you need to find the perfect research project. I just looked on the department website and emailed one at a time!

• Unpaid but receiving grant/financial assistance (Tisch Summer Fellow) What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I spent my time helping senior fellows with research and conference logistics. I also worked on writing my own research paper under their guidance.

How did you find your internship?

I found the internship by internet search, however one position was offered through Tisch, so I applied through them. (National Defense University has many different centers with many interns.) What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I liked being able to work on my own research and that the office was flexible and allowed me to attend interesting lectures/events around DC during work hours.

What do you find challenging?

I was responsible for a project that required using a computer program I was not familiar with, so I spent a lot of time trying to teach it to myself.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be ready to read and write a lot.

How did you find your internship?Tisch Summer Fellows

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy working for an organization that is on the right side of history. It is particularly fun to work for an organization that is experiencing a lot of wins right now. For example, winning marriage in the Supreme Court and more inclusion for all members in the LGBTQ community.

What do you find challenging?

One thing that is challenging about my internship is learning all of the terminology and issues that are used and affect all the various aspects of the broad LGBTQ community.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Take initiative to develop projects to maximize efficiency for your organization. Applying through the Tisch Summer Fellows usually occurs in the beginning of Spring semester.
