A lot of my time is spent making phone calls to remind individuals of upcoming information sessions. I also contribute to the social media presence, mostly via Facebook posting and private emails, edit flyers and other documents, and help out with data analysis.

How did you find your internship?

I found the internship on Internships.com, through a specific search.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy seeing the impact my work has on the non-profit that I work for. After making calls all day, it is satisfying to know that our information sessions are filled with new potential students who can really benefit from what we have to offer.

What do you find challenging?

The most challenging aspect is keeping our potential students engaged and excited, whether it's over the phone or through social media.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Be eager, even if you are doing the easiest, dullest tasks. It shows your dedication and commitment if you are thankful for being allowed to file papers, or organize a folder.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory | www.llnl.gov

• Charlie Colley (Applied Mathematics, Engineering Science, 2016)

• Institute for Scientific Computing Research (ISCR) intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am conducting research into improving random walker algorithm convergence. I write python code that runs simulations and report the results in figures. I work in a team where I can discuss ideas on our projects. I meet with a mentor who guides our progress on the project, and at the end of the summer we present a poster of our work.

How did you find your internship?

My research advisor put me in contact with a friend What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy the freedom that the lab offers and the experience of working as a researcher. It really helped solidify my decision to pursue grad school. Everyone here is very friendly and intelligent.

What do you find challenging?

It was challenging to come to a new place by myself, but overall I came through. Being concerned with my project was a little stressful; it can be difficult to receive negative results 90% of the time. The support of the people I was working with was appreciated.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

I would only go if you really want to do research. This kind of job won't go well if you're not self-driven.

With so much freedom, it can be easy to stray from your work. Being interested in what you're studying and continually learning and asking new questions will take you far.

Let's Get Ready | www.letsgetready.org

• Napassorn Boon-Long (Economics, International Relations, CMS minor, 2016)

• Development and Programming Intern

• Part-time, 16 hours per week

• Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I write Let’s Get Ready (LGR) alumni success stories, draft correspondence and donor appeals, and maintain LGR's social media accounts. I also work on graphic design and event planning projects, and I coordinated 5 college trips for 50+ students.

How did you find your internship?

I found the internship on Idealist.com.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy the autonomy I have. My supervisors trust me with a lot of important tasks. The hours are flexible so I don’t have a strict 9-5 schedule. LGR works towards a great cause so working for them has been very inspirational.

What do you find challenging?

Because LGR has a very small staff, I often have to juggle a lot of projects at once. Managing those have been challenging, but by knowing what to prioritize, I am able to get everything done by the deadline.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Time management and communication skills are very important! It's vital to talk to your supervisors and make sure you're on the same page, especially since you're juggling many projects at once.

Liberty Mutual Insurance | www.libertymutualgroup.com

• Gabriel Rondon Ichikawa (Economics, International Relations, 2016)

• Product Management Intern in Commercial Insurance

• Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I was assigned two contrasting projects. For the Model Intelligence team, I had to redesign, populate, and analyze a report for a new pricing model's impact on the business. For the Industry Analytics team, I had to complete an analysis of a specific industry and whether or not Liberty Mutual wanted to grow business in that industry.

How did you find your internship?

I started looking into Liberty Mutual when they came for the internship fair and I applied to the internship via the Liberty Mutual website.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

There are a lot of young people at this company and they really stress the importance of work-life balance. The work they gave me is clearly very meaningful and important to the company and I'm treated often like an employee rather than just the intern.

What do you find challenging?

The insurance industry is incredibly nuanced and has a lot of jargon which is very overwhelming at first.

As you get more familiar with it, the work becomes easier. Also, the work is very Excel heavy and I wasn't incredibly well-versed in Excel.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Start thinking about applying really early. Go out of your way to research companies and industries that you might have not considered. Last year, I would have never thought insurance is what I wanted to do and now I'm very confident that I want to go into this industry. Use all the resources that Tufts offers and don't feel defeated by rejection.

About the OrganizationLiberty Mutual InsuranceBoston, MA

Mamelodi Initiative | http://mamelodi.org

• Y-Binh Nguyen (American Studies/Undecided, 2018)

• Intern

• Full-time, approx. 35 hours per week

• Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I organized files, took an inventory of post-program supplies, taught Math and English skills to 23 students (grades 9 and 10), participated in intern-personal mentorship, coordinated high school age coteachers for workshop programs at Bajabulile Primary School, and conducted pre-program outreach.

How did you find your internship?

I worked with the Mamelodi Initiative and The School for Ethics and Global Leadership for the program at Bajabulile for two summers prior to my internship.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoyed working with the students and connecting with other volunteers, while simultaneously learning about myself and the way I interact with a community so different than my own.

What do you find challenging?

The most challenging part was dealing with people who did not understand the dynamics of race in a community like Mamelodi, especially with the history of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa.

Mamelodi is a township that remains despite the revolution against apartheid in South Africa, which means the inequalities are systematic and stem from a greater history. Without this understanding one cannot truly talk to students about their lives and support them in meaningful ways. The residual effects of racism are clear when one looks at this community.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Try to understand the context of the community you are working with. Focus on learning and growing with the community rather than “fixing” it.

About the Organization Mamelodi Initiative Mamelodi, Gauteng Province, South Africa The Mamelodi Initiative is a not-for-profit organization focused on improving the lives of residents in Mamelodi, South Africa. Through providing resources to enable community engagement and education, the Mamelodi Initiative strives to empower members of the community so that the community can make the changes it wants to see.
