«Welcome to the fourth edition of the TIP Book! The Tufts Career Center is excited to provide you with internship profiles packed with helpful advice ...»

-- [ Page 17 ] --

It important to strike a balance between initiative and humility in the film industry. I found that there are times to speak up and voice my opinion, but other times when I let the creativity come from the people I am helping.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

If you want to work in the film industry, find a small company you vibe well with. I was lucky with Interloper because I ended up making close friendships with people who have connected me to the worldwide film industry (in Chile!!).

About the OrganizationInterloper FilmsPasadena, CA

Interloper Films is an international award-winning full-service production company that develops and produces original feature length documentaries and cutting-edge web series. Its founder and CEA (Chief Executive Artist), Ondi Timoner has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice. Her 2004 doc, DIG!, explores the collision of art & commerce through the starcrossed rivalry of the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, while her 2009 top prizewinner, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC, examines how willingly we will trade our privacy in the virtual age through the social experiments of Internet visionary, Josh Harris. Her other features include The Nature of the Beast (1994), Join Us (2007), COOL IT (2010), and Brand: A Second Coming (2015).

International Peace Bureau | www.ipb.org and www.gcoms.org

• Alicia Sanders-Zakre (International Relations, 2017)

• Outreach Coordinator

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

My main project was organizing the youth outreach program. I also worked on our communications by managing the IPB twitter feed and updating the website. Due to IPB's ECOSOC status at the UN, I was able to attend UNODA and UNIDIR events and write reports to be published on our website.

How did you find your internship?

At my previous internship with American Friends Service Committee, I helped to coordinate an antinuclear mobilization at the NPT Review Conference, which the International Peace Bureau endorsed. I researched the organization and applied for an internship.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Considering the small size of the office, I was able to complete a variety of tasks, take on a lot of responsibility and learn about the organization. Living in Geneva has allowed me to meet with many professionals with similar career interests and learn about future opportunities.

What do you find challenging?

It was necessary to take a lot of initiative and be creative, as I did not receive much guidance on how to construct a youth outreach program. Ultimately that became a perk because I was able to take pride in projects that really felt like my own, but it was certainly a challenge in the beginning.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Take initiative. In a small organization, you can often suggest projects you are passionate about. And don't be intimidated to talk to professionals inside and outside the organization about their careers.

Even some high level UN experts were happy to sit down and talk when I asked.

About the OrganizationInternational Peace BureauGeneva, Switzerland

The International Peace Bureau is dedicated to the vision of a World Without War. Our current main programme centres on Disarmament for Sustainable Development and within this, our focus is mainly on the reallocation of military expenditure. We believe that by reducing funding for the military sector, significant amounts of money could be released for social projects, domestically or abroad, which could lead to the fulfillment of real human needs and the protection of the environment. At the same time, we support a range of disarmament campaigns and supply data on the economic dimensions of weapons and conflicts. Our campaigning work on nuclear disarmament began in the 1980s. Our 300 member organisations in 70 countries, together with individual members, form a global network, bringing together knowledge and campaigning experience in a common cause. We link experts and advocates working on similar issues to build strong civil society movements.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

The culture is great! Working at a smaller company is nice because you really get to know most of your coworkers. The apprentice program is structured as well as programs at much larger companies, so you receive lots of guidance along the way.

What do you find challenging?

The learning curve was a little steep at first because I had never coded in Objective C before, but there were plenty of resources to get up to speed.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Study for technical interviews! Whether it's this job or another one, it is really important to review your computer science fundamentals before going into interviews.

Judge Baker Children's Center | bcc.harvard.edu/summer-treatment-program  Katherine Harwood (Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Computer Science minor, 2017)  Counselor  Full-time, 40 hours per week  Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am a counselor at a summer treatment program for children with ADHD and other behavioral disorders. I am with the children all day, leading them through skill-building and team-building activities, focusing on sports skills and social skills. The program implements an intricate point system for the children: they lose points for certain negative behaviors and gain them for positive behaviors. I monitor children's behavior, inform them of point losses and gains, and keep track of each child's points and progress throughout the program.

How did you find your internship?

Family referral What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I've really enjoyed the bonds I've made with the kids and the other counselors. The counselor to child ratio is about 2:3, so I've gotten to know each child very well. I've discovered each kid's strengths and weaknesses, sense of humor, and how they view the world. Though there are many tough and stressful moments, there are just as many times when I am blown away by their maturity, generosity and lucidity.

What do you find challenging?

Each child responds differently to the same strategies, so finding out how to effectively communicate with and incentivize each child is tricky. A strategy that worked with one child at 9am may not work with the same child that afternoon. It is also hard to coordinate with my fellow counselors at times. The nature of our job means we all have to be on the same page, or at least appear to be on the same page in front of the children, which can be tricky when we have different ideas about dealing with certain situations and tempers are wearing thin.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

They do not know how many counselors they will need until they know how many children are signed up for the program, so it is sort of a rolling hiring process. Be flexible. Though we start with a rigid schedule for the program, there has not been a day where we haven't had to deviate from the schedule at least once. Be patient. The kids can be hard to deal with sometimes, but you cannot show that you are stressed or upset. Be open to the kids. Though the counselors are authority figures/disciplinarians, it is also important to engage with the kids in normal conversation, one person to another. My favorite memories are not when I am taking or giving points or instructions, but when I am just shooting the breeze with one of my six year olds.

About the Organization Judge Baker Children's Center, Summer Treatment Program; Boston, MA Using well-documented treatments shown to be effective through rigorous research, the Summer Treatment Program (STP) has successfully helped more than 2,500 children with ADHD (and their families) by combining a high degree of structure with tailored summer fun. Featured on national television news and in national magazines, STP has been named a Model Program in Child and Family Mental Health by the American Psychological Association.

JustiServ, Inc. | www.justiserv.com  Erin Sifre (Psychology, Political Science, 2018)  Business Development and Marketing Intern  Full-time, 35-40 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

JustiServ is an online legal marketplace where consumers can search for lawyers to handle their specific case and compare pricing, location, and experience. As a business development associate on JustiServ's lawyer acquisition team, I developed and executed marketing and outreach strategies to encourage lawyers to use our website and participate in our sponsored events. I conducted legal and market research to find attorneys and firms appropriate for the needs of our client base. In addition, I developed content for our consumer education blog and legal help-text features, and I helped form partnerships in the greater Boston Area.

How did you find your internship?

I found the internship opportunity through Jumbo Jobs.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

The community was the best part of my internship; everyone in the office was extremely intelligent and friendly and fostered a community of productivity and growth. We all became close friends and motivated each other to think creatively and achieve goals. Our team leaders were phenomenal and gave us a lot of independence with our tasks, allowing us to grow as young professionals.

What do you find challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my internship was working for a tech startup. Although I worked for the business side, I was exposed to a lot of coding and computer science terminology that I was unfamiliar with and did not know how to use in conversation or practice. It was often confusing, but I understood how essential this science was to the success of our business. This motivated me to begin learning basic coding on my own and reach out to my more tech-savvy peers for support and advice about coding.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

I would advise almost any college student I know to consider interning for a startup. The environment challenges you to think creatively in a real-world setting, and you are not belittled or looked down upon for your age. If you are interested in interning for a startup, I would advise setting goals and working towards them and working with your fellow interns/teammates to think of new solutions to problems.

Always feel free to share ideas or suggestions with your team; you are there for a reason, and your insight and thoughts are valuable and can be essential contributions to the success of your company.

About the Organization JustiServ's mission is to connect clients with the right attorneys for their cases, at prices they can afford.
