«Welcome to the fourth edition of the TIP Book! The Tufts Career Center is excited to provide you with internship profiles packed with helpful advice ...»

-- [ Page 14 ] --

I enjoy doing real experiments and seeing what research is like in an industrial setting as compared to an academic setting. I am not doing administrative work but I am doing research. The people I work for are very kind, which also makes work enjoyable.

What do you find challenging?

You have to jump straight into a new research topic and start performing experiments. It was a completely new topic that I had not learned about previously, so I spent a lot of time reading on my own to fully understand the background information of my project.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Start looking and applying for internships during winter break. There are a lot of application deadlines in January and February for this internship. Also look on Jumbo Jobs to see if on campus interviews are available - this is an easier way to ensure that you will get a first interview. If you just apply on their main website, where they are receiving thousands of applications, it is less likely you will get contacted for an interview.

Gilead Sciences | www.gilead.com

• Taylor Westmont (Biology, 2017)

• Biologics and Target Biology Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I have been assigned to a project in the Biologics and Target Biology Department at Gilead. I work under a mentor, doing tissue culture and running assays, including Western blots, ELISAs, immunoprecipitation (IP), Coomassie Blue stains, etc. to determine the characteristics and different levels of protein isotopes.

How did you find your internship?

I applied through the Gilead website. After not hearing anything back for awhile, I emailed an HR rep and she started the interview process.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Gilead has a really strong intern program. There are a lot of us here and they have many events for us.

There are weekly "Intern Seminars" where they introduce different departments and areas of research. I have learned a lot, not only in the lab, but from my fellow coworkers, who are always willing to share their experiences.

What do you find challenging?

I am constantly learning new information and it can be hard to keep track of it all, but my mentor is very supportive and I am becoming more self-sufficient.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Email a lot of people, and often. And if someone hasn't gotten back to you in a week, send them an email to inquire if they've heard anything. I started emailing Gilead in January.

Global Partners LP | www.globalp.com

• Edward Connolly (French, Economics, 2017)

• Terminal Operations Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

Daily, I organize and compile information for filings, meetings, and briefings, all in the name of improving the operation of Global's terminals. In the long-term, all summer interns work on a small group project aimed at improving the bottom lines of Global's convenience and grocery stores.

How did you find your internship?

Family/friend referral What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Global is a great company because of the people who work here. They are motivated, detail-oriented, youthful, and friendly, and those attitudes are shown in the company's growth and success in the past 7 years.

What do you find challenging?

Trying to find time to complete the daily work, the long-term projects and tasks, as well as making the most of the networking opportunities that are everywhere; you can't hope to bother everybody you see in the name of networking and still expect the work to get done.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Apply early (prior to February, if possible) and thoroughly research the company beforehand. During the internship, take the time to ask questions and to learn everything that is going on. For example, if I hear an acronym I do not know, I write it down and look it up.

Google | www.google.com

• Tom Wang (Computer Science, 2017)

• Software Engineering Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

In short: search analysis. I wrote MapReduces in Go and other data processing programs in Python to quantify the impact of Google Doodles and their potential for user engagement growth. I can't say too much else about my project, but an average week included programming, meetings, one or two awesome tech talks, social intern events, and lots of free food.

How did you find your internship?

I applied on Google.com/jobs.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Everything! But most of all the intelligent people and amazing resources at Google. They surround you with enough amazing people, tools, and fun to make your job pretty easy, so work never really felt like work.

What do you find challenging?

There are dozens of internal tools to learn before you can start contributing to the code base, so the ramp up period was not super fast nor easy. My project was Data Science-related which was also totally out of my comfort zone, but ultimately very rewarding to complete.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

If you're at a bigger company, meet as many people as possible. Building a strong network of bright friends is the best thing you can do. Also take advantage of everything your company offers, especially learning resources.

About the Organization Google New York, NY Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Greater Boston Legal Services | www.gbls.org  Anonymous (International Relations, Child Development, 2016)  Legal Intern  Full-time, 40 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I am interning in the Housing Unit of GBLS. Every day I meet with clients, collect information regarding their housing situations and help to identify issues that need to be resolved regarding those situations.

Afterward, I meet with my supervisors to discuss the cases, and we decide which steps we should take from there. Following those small meetings, I usually spend time doing research to see how we can support the cases for our clients. At other times, I serve as an interpreter for non-English speakers or go to the court house to check files on cases. Everything does not happen exactly in that order since each day is different.

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship through a referral from someone in the Tufts International Relations Office.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy being able to help people who truly need assistance but simply cannot afford it. I learn so much from my interactions with them and from the research I do to help their cases. It really is a wonderful feeling to help someone win a case or keep a roof over their heads.

What do you find challenging?

One of the hardest things to do is to tell a client that you are not able to help him/her with a case or that we have lost the case and they are going to lose their housing. In those moments, it is hard to separate being professional from my feelings as a human being and my desire to help. I am still learning how to make those separations; however, I have grown to understand that although we cannot help everyone, the best we can do is to focus on the positive differences that we can make.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

I would advise a potential applicant to send in an application by the end of January at the latest. I would also suggest looking for funding sources early since there are a limited number of internship grants available through Tufts. At this office, there is never a dull moment and one is always working, so the best thing to do every morning is to mentally prepare yourself for a full day of work and push yourself to accept and combat the challenges that certain cases may present. Do research at your desk during down times; it can help you respond to a client's issue more promptly in the future. Lastly, ask your supervisors and co-interns as many questions as possible. Since most are lawyers/law school students, they offer a lot of great advice and can become great contacts to have in the future.

About the Organization Greater Boston Legal Services Boston, MA GBLS provides free legal assistance to as many low-income families as possible to help them secure the most basic necessities of life. GBLS plays a unique role in the social service delivery system. It is the agency to which other providers refer clients when no one else can help and legal assistance is needed.

Grow Clinic and Children's HealthWatch | www.bmc.org/pediatrics-growclinic.htm and www.childrenshealthwatch.org  Leanna Pham (Community Health, Sociology, 2018)  Intern and Research Assistant  Full-time, 40 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

At the Grow Clinic, I retrieved supplies, brought patients around the hospital, supervised children in the waiting room or during their visits, and shadowed the physician, social worker, and nutritionist when time allowed. For Children's HealthWatch, I interviewed parents about issues relating to healthcare, housing, childcare, etc.

How did you find your internship?

I found it online through the TIP Book.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoyed my coworkers and the wide range of disciplines that I could explore despite working there for just 10 weeks.

What do you find challenging?

This was my first internship, so I found it challenging to reach out to my supervisors and staff members because they often appeared to be preoccupied with other important matters. Therefore, I felt like I received less supervision and tasks than I had hoped for.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Make sure to schedule time to meet with everyone you work with. This will provide an opportunity to build lasting connections and learn about career paths. Come in with set goals and ideas if you want to be put right to work.

About the OrganizationGrow Clinic and Children's HealthWatchBoston, MA

The Grow Clinic for Children is an outpatient subspecialty clinic at Boston Medical Center that started in 1984 to provide comprehensive specialty medical, nutritional, developmental and social services and dietary assistance to children from the Greater Boston area referred with Failure To Thrive (FTT) by their primary care physicians. In addition to providing clinical services, we advocate for policies that decrease the number of children in need. Children’s HealthWatch is the outreach and research arm of the Grow Clinic. Children’s HealthWatch identifies need for additional services for children in the pediatric emergency room with food insecurity and previously identified FTT and monitors the impact of public policy on the health of children ages zero to three.
