• Gabe Terrell (Computer Science, 2017)

• Software Development Intern

• Full-time, 45 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

Every intern is assigned an individual project for the summer. My project was to develop a new feature for their iOS application. Daily tasks consisted of meetings with my mentor and team and a lot of mobile development. Weekly tasks included design meetings, team leader check-ins, and office hour drop-ins for assistance when need be.

How did you find your internship?

I ran into their booth at the career fair, was intrigued by their company philosophy, and applied on the spot.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

They gave me a lot of freedom to work on my project and really personalize it, but also kept me involved with design meetings and company standards so that my project can actually be deployed with a future software release. I also learned a lot about corporate development and organization.

What do you find challenging?

I was assigned to develop an iOS application with zero prior iOS experience, so I had to learn mobile development from the ground up very quickly. They gave tutorials and lessons early on in the internship, but I was expected to read into and discover a lot of it on my own.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

This internship is as much as you make out of it. Schedule meetings with mentors, teachers, and team leaders to maximize what you learn (you are given the freedom and responsibility to schedule these).

Also, explore the campus in its entirety when you have the chance. It is truly a one-of-a-kind venue!

Executive Office of the Mayor, District of Columbia Government | http://mayor.dc.gov  Hashim Pasha (International Relations, Arabic, 2016)  L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Engagement and Development) DC Intern  Part-time, 25-30 hours per week  Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I joined the Strategic Government Operations cluster in the Office of the City Administrator (OCA) and was responsible for drafting Decision Point Memos for the Mayor and Deputy Mayors. I was also tasked with writing letters on behalf of DC City Administrator Rashad Young. I performed operations oversight for 8 major DC Government Agencies, which included on-site inspections and organizing meetings between Agencies and the OCA. In addition, I attended weekly L.E.A.D. DC Leadership Sessions and conducted field visits to enhance the District's ability to respond to constituent issues.

How did you find your internship?Jumbo Jobs

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I am treated as an equal colleague in all aspects of my job. I bear the same responsibility for projects and initiatives as those who work with me, and the fact that I am an intern has in no way held me back from achieving my goals within District Government. I feel as if my participation in the team is vital, and I have been assigned substantial work, which allows me to see the impact that I've had on the city.

What do you find challenging?

What I find most challenging about my internship is the fast pace with which the Office of the City Administrator works. Every day new challenges arise, and there is no shortage of issues to deal with on behalf of District residents. Coordinating with dozens of District Agencies to create solutions can sometimes be a tough (but rewarding) task.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

This is an excellent internship that allows you to gain hands-on experience in Government Operations and Public Policy. Deadlines are variable, so visit the Mayor's website for updates. The District Government values dynamic individuals who are able to bring fresh ideas to governance. Creativity is appreciated, and I would strongly encourage Tufts students with an interest in Government to apply.

About the Organization Executive Office of the Mayor, District of Columbia Government Washington, D.C.

The Office of the City Administrator provides oversight and support to the Deputy Mayors and increases government effectiveness with cross-agency and targeted improvement initiatives, including the integration of strategic policy priorities, budgetary constraints, and operational directives.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center | www.keepthemflying.org  Ashley Bucklin (Biochemistry, 2015)  Hospital Intern  Full-time, 40+ hours per week (On-Call at all hours, 2 nights a week)  Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I help run the wild bird hospital, which takes in 5-10 patients (injured wild birds) on an average day and cares for around 150 patients in total. Between three of us, we clean every cage twice daily, administer medications and fluids, stitch up lacerations on new patients, control anesthesia for any procedures, and do anything else that the birds need. Twice a week I have a cell phone linked to the bird emergency line, which anyone who finds a bird in a fifty mile radius can call. When someone calls, I pick up the birds and admit them to the hospital.

How did you find your internship?

The hospital has an associated sanctuary where all permanent resident birds live, which is open to the public. I had visited the sanctuary many times and last spring break I stopped an employee to ask whether they offered internships. I got the email address of the head rehabilitator and emailed her my resume. A few weeks later I had a skype interview and was offered the position.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Every new patient requires a new treatment plan and that means I learn new skills almost every day, including new animal handling skills that I'm developing constantly. I can now handle both raptors (who tend to attack with their talons) and cormorants/herons (who tend to attack by stabbing with their beaks) well enough to give them shots and or tube feed them.

What do you find challenging?

I live very far from almost everything down here and I work a LOT of hours between actual work hours and my nights on call, which makes driving up to Miami (the closest actual city) pretty much impossible.

It can be kind of boring, but I get over that pretty quickly when an injured bird shows up.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

If you want an internship with animals, find the organization and email your resume, or even better - call them, even if they don't list an internship online. This internship wasn't listed anywhere, but by reaching out in person I managed to find it. Working with animals is hectic, and people generally don't take the time to advertise an internship because they just don't have the time. That also means many places won't have the time to respond to you, but you never know until you try! Pick a type of institution you want to work for, make a list of those in your area, and get your resume to every single one.

About the Organization The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is a not for profit 501(c)3 conservation organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced; providing or locating a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released; and educating the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.

geniusHive Foundation | www.genius-hive.com  Gabriel Dowdy-Terracciano (Peace and Justice Studies, Jazz Performance at NEC, 2016)  Faculty Intern;

 Full-time, 45 hours per week  Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I helped geniusHive increase its teaching services program from zero to three schools. I also assisted with facilitating the ABRSM exams (the primary way that musical achievement and ability are measured in Ghana). I helped to lead ensembles of players who met for rehearsals on Saturdays. In addition, I made numerous recordings for geniusHive including Bach’s A Minor Violin Concerto. Along with recording and performing, I gave lectures on Music History, Classical and Jazz Music Theory, and Master Classes once per week on each subject. I created lecture notes and guides for future faculty use. Finally, I gave private lessons to young violin/viola students once per week for the length of my stay and worked one-on-one with the geniusHive string faculty.

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship through the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana while I was a student with Tufts in Ghana. I made contact with a geniusHive faculty member who introduced me to the rest of the crew. I played a concert with the faculty string quartet for the Japanese Ambassador during my TIG stay, and so was able to establish a good connection that led to the internship.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I got to experience the process of setting up music programs both within/outside geniusHive, witnessed firsthand the activities of a new music school in a developing country and the accompanying obstacles, and strengthend my skills as a teacher and musician. I most enjoyed my teaching responsibilities; I had to make classical music jargon accessible to a large population of younger students. I also enjoyed developing my critical listening skills so that I could deliver helpful feedback.

What do you find challenging?

We had to constantly sell the concept of musical education, and the best I could do was to be a positive representative of geniusHive and be a person for others as much as possible. Instrument buying and upkeep was difficult, since most music shops do not sell violins, and those that did often sold instruments of poor quality. I also ran into many music teachers who took our new school as a threat and exhibited a real “God Complex” in dealing with other teachers/schools.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Musical education in Ghana is still in its infancy and obstacles are common. Since such a large part of Ghanaians live in relative poverty, the first thought on most minds is survival. This is completely understandable, but it means most people are not interested in music education since it is not linked to survival in the short term. It is important to internalize one’s own philosophy of why musical education is relevant before engaging in an internship such as this one. GeniusHive is thinking of the long term with big ideas and altruistic goals.

About the Organization geniusHive Foundation; Osu, Accra, Ghana geniusHive is a non-profit focused on inspiring students to strive for excellence in present and future endeavors through the early appreciation of music theory, performance and composition. Our program adopts the ABRSM approach to developing skills necessary for unearthing creative genius.

What do you do as an intern at this organization?

On a daily basis, I work on a project in a laboratory setting to optimize one of their protocols. I plan and perform experiments and then analyze the data. I also keep a laboratory notebook and go to weekly lab meetings where I present my findings. At the end of the internship, I will give a poster presentation of my research for the summer.

How did you find your internship?

I found this internship on their main website. However, I got an onsite interview by going on Jumbo Jobs.
