«Welcome to the fourth edition of the TIP Book! The Tufts Career Center is excited to provide you with internship profiles packed with helpful advice ...»

-- [ Page 12 ] --

Try to figure out a routine for yourself and figure out how to be the most productive. Figuring out how I work best has been a large part of my internship. Get to know as many people as possible, and ask for help when you need it.

Documentary Educational Resources, Inc. | www.der.org

• Maya Zeigler (Anthropology, Film, Dance Minor, 2016)

• Acquisitions & Marketing Intern

• Full-time, ~30 hours per week

• Unpaid but receiving Career Center Internship Grant What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I work on Acquisitions, watching incoming documentary submissions and giving input on new and upcoming sponsorship projects. All interns have a personal project as well: I'm the coordinator on federal grant proposals and submissions for sponsored filmmakers and for DER.

How did you find your internship?

I received a contact referral from my January 'Winternship' through the Film/Media Studies program.

Ask Julie Dobrow/Howard Woolf about those if you'd like to learn more about them; it’s a cool program.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

As someone working at DER, I enjoy the access to a huge wealth of documentary films and festival circuit films. This organization is a small non-profit, with a small office staff and huge network. The nature of the job is very much for self-motivated hard workers, and it favors those who don't want highstress office jobs.

What do you find challenging?

Working in an office environment is always the most exciting. It also demands that you make yourself do the work, because the staff here won't force you to do things -- you get out of this internship what you put into it. You can easily sink if you don't motivate yourself everyday.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Embrace your personal interests and find a niche in the work of a small non-profit documentary film distributor. It's incredibly interesting and rewarding to be exposed to film work of this nature everyday.

About the OrganizationDocumentary Educational Resources, Inc.Watertown, MA

DER's mission is to promote thought-provoking documentary film and media for learning about the people and cultures of the world. We believe in the importance of connecting filmmakers and audiences, and in maintaining high professional standards in the quality of our products and our interactions with filmmakers, educators, and our professional community. Through fiscal sponsorship, workshops and consulting, we support filmmakers who use media in the documentation of social and cultural practices, processes and beliefs.

DOROT USA | www.dorotusa.org

• Leila Smiley (Sociology, Communications and Media Studies, 2017)

• Social Media Intern

• Full-time, 32 hours per week

• Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I worked with my supervisor to create content for the DOROT website and social media pages. I created 6 videos for the DOROT website and updated the social media pages daily. I also worked with senior citizens during home visits with the other students, who were all social work interns.

How did you find your internship?Internmatch.com

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I really liked making videos and learning about marketing and social media. It was also fun working with the nine other college interns and the teen interns, as well as the employees. It was a very close-knit, small organization so I got to know everyone and always had a lot to do.

What do you find challenging?

I didn't expect to spend so much time working with the seniors, but I enjoyed it. Budgeting my time was sometimes difficult; they gave me a lot to do (but I never had to do anything after work hours).

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Apply early, as decisions are rolling (I applied in January). They're looking for friendly people who really enjoy community service and working with the elderly, and also people who are good with technology, marketing, and creating content.

About the OrganizationDOROT USANew York, NY

For four decades, DOROT has been an innovative leader in the fields of aging services and volunteerism.

Our Mission Statement highlights DOROT’s belief that reducing social isolation, along with providing concrete services, has a powerful effect on improving the lives and health of older adults. Our programs have a real impact on enabling seniors to live with dignity, independence and improved health in the community. In an era of concern over rapidly rising health care costs and a nation that is rapidly aging, our work will have increasing importance.

Economic Policy Institute | www.epi.org

• Claire Sleigh (Economics, International Relations, 2016)

• Peterson Fiscal Policy Intern

• Full-time, 40 hours per week

• Paid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

My main project for the summer has been researching and writing a policy brief (at EPI, that's 25 pages!) on the future of Medicare spending and how it relates to the federal budget. I've spent about half of my summer working on this project and working with the policy director who is co-authoring the paper with me. Other than that, I've done a variety of tasks from gathering data, doing research, and emailing people.

How did you find your internship?

The Economics department sent an email about the Peter G. Peterson Foundation internships, and I applied to EPI through them.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

There is a lot of freedom and independence, and I essentially had the opportunity to pick my research topic. It is a very progressive organization, but they do top level research. It was really cool to work at a place that did hard-hitting research backing up all the things I believe in but never really knew why.

What do you find challenging?

The freedom and independence were actually the most challenging aspects because I had to be really proactive about getting assignments. It was sort of a disorganized office at times.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

Talk to people, ask them about their lives, their work experiences, and how they know that they are in the right place.

Eliot Community Human Services, Outpatient Clinic | www.eliotchs.org

• Adrienne Sacks (Clinical Psychology, Studio Art Minor, 2016)

• Academic Intern

• Part-time, 16 hours per week

• Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

My main job is to manage the intake line. I respond to calls from potential clients as well as their social workers, hospital staff, family members, doctors, and law enforcement. I have also assisted with group therapy and observed supervisors.

How did you find your internship?

I found my internship at the Tufts Career Fair. After giving my resume to the HR representative, I was contacted by the Clinical Coordinator to interview.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy being on the front lines for the work done at the clinic. I am the first person someone talks to, so I have the opportunity to give them a good first impression. Both the clients and clinic are extremely appreciative of the assistance.

What do you find challenging?

The challenges of the internship are the same challenges present in any psychiatric care setting. Some clients can be short-tempered and demanding. Others have stories of trauma that can be sad to hear.

The work is emotionally intense, but very rewarding.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

I was not shy about telling the supervisors when I wanted more work and patient interaction. They did not want to overwhelm their interns, but I reached out to the management and clinicians to ask for more opportunities.

Embassy of Pakistan | www.embassyofpakistanusa.org

• Hashim Pasha (International Relations, Arabic, 2016)

• Intern

• Part-time, 35 hours per week

• Unpaid What do you do as an intern at this organization?

I perform a variety of tasks for the embassy. I conduct research on topics of interest to Pakistan's foreign policy, and I also attend think tank briefings and write summary reports for diplomats at the embassy.

Reports on topics of high interest are sent back to the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad.

How did you find your internship?Embassy website

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy that I'm able to be at the helm of International Relations. I am able to see decisions take place that are covered in newspapers the next day, I've been able to meet senior policy makers of International Affairs, and I've also gotten to know the internal workings of an embassy.

What do you find challenging?

The sheer number of topics and events to cover that relate to Pakistan are very high, as Pakistani-U.S.

Relations are currently of critical importance to global security. This keeps us going nearly 7 days a week.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?

My advice is to check the embassy websites of countries you are interested in to see if they offer internships. Never be afraid to send emails to inquire about internships, and always send as many inquiries as possible.
