Following on from the phenomenal success of last year’s inaugural staging, we are delighted to once again present ‘4 Plays in a Day’.

Skibbereen itself becomes a stage for the day with 4 excellent plays by 4 different companies in 4 different venues around the town. Themes include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the daring 19th century rescue of Fenian convicts from a penal colony in Australia, two Irish women’s ‘trip of a lifetime’ to New York and the horrors endured under General Pinochet’s regime in Chile.

Tickets are available for each individual performance but why not become a theatre buff for the day and go to all four! To paraphrase Mr. Shakespeare himself, “All The Town’s A Stage”.

Day Ticket for all four plays: ¤25

Donal O’Kelly is an award-wining writer and one of the finest Irish actors of his generation. Trevor Knight was a founder member of ‘80s pop group ‘Auto Da Fe’ and has written scores for more than 50 theatrical works.

At the end of his life, Cézanne remarked that “The Louvre is the book from which we learn to read,” and in his study of the human form he often made drawings of sculptures in the Louvre. JeanMarie Straub and Danièle Huillet made over two dozen films between 1963 and 2006. They have been described as the greatest of unknown film-makers and their works are rarely available. The Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to screen ‘Une Visite au Louvre’ as part of this year’s festival. This film consists of a series of long shots on a selection of paintings hanging in The Louvre coupled with a vibrant text attributed to Cézanne and put into writing by the poet Joachim Gasquet.

Cézanne writes: “A picture doesn’t represent anything, it doesn’t need to represent anything in the first place but the colours...

you have to see it with your eyes, do you understand? That’s all the painter wanted. His psychology is the way he makes two colours meet. That’s where his emotion is. That’s his personal history, his truth, his depth. For he’s a painter, you see, not a poet or a philosopher!”.

Canon Goodman Concert Abbeystrewry Church. ¤20

Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny with Eoin and Anna Quinn In honour of the remarkable 19th century music-collector James Goodman, who was rector in Skibbereen from 1867 and who built this beautiful church which opened in 1890, we are delighted to present two giants of the Irish traditional scene, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny.

Between them, Irvine and Lunny have been at the helm of legendary bands like Planxty, Sweeney’s Men, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts and Mozaik. Their unique style of accompaniment is an on-going influence in the wider world of traditional music and both have contributed heavily to the renaissance of Irish music over the past forty five years. Tonight they will present a programme of Irish music and songs including some of Andy’s originals, as well as music from Eastern Europe and beyond. Do not miss this unique opportunity to see two of the legends of Irish music on stage together!

To open tonight’s concert we are thrilled to introduce two excellent young local musicians. Eoin Quinn is the finest young piper in Skibbereen and got his love of traditional music and particularly the uileann pipes from his grandfather Hugh. His first cousin Anna is a fine fiddler from Clonakilty. We know that Canon Goodman would be very pleased to hear the sound of the pipes still being played on the site where he himself played so many tunes almost 150 years ago.

Directed by Mary Lance | 2002 | 57mins Agnes Martin is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil lines and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Martin believed that spiritual inspiration and not intellect created great work. “Without awareness of beauty, innocence and happiness” Martin wrote “one cannot make works of art.” ‘With my Back to the World’ is a remarkable documentary on the internationally renowned painter, designated by ARTnews Magazine as one of the world’s topten living artists. This documentary was shot over a period of four years, from 1998 through 2002, Agnes Martin’s ninetieth year. Interviews with Martin are inter-cut with shots at work in her studio in Taos, New Mexico, with photographs and archival footage, and with images of her work from over five decades. It is a venue for Martin to speak about her work, her working methods, her life as an artist, and her views about the creative process. She also discusses her film, ‘Gabriel’ and reads from her poetry and lectures. In keeping with Martin’s chosen life of solitude, she alone appears in the documentary.

The Bird Song Project is a celebration of traditional songs about birds devised and produced by Michael Fortune and Aileen Lambert for the 2015 Bealtaine Festival. Throughout the month of May, thirty-three older traditional singers performed at five concerts across the country, whilst sixteen traditional singing circles, from Wexford to Derry, also participated by hosting their own ‘Bird Song’ night. A recent count confirmed that between the 1st and 31st of May 2015, over 500 traditional songs were sung in Ireland that featured birds in them, as a result of this project. Tonight five of these singers have come together to perform a once-off, unique concert as part of a double-bill with West Cork’s Starling Song Project. The five singers are Tim Dennehy, Máire Ní Chéileachair, Tim Lyons, Jackie Boyce and Maurice Leyden.

This is a truly unmissable event and a must-see for all lovers of song.

The Starling Song Project Liz Clark with Deirdre Archbold, Christine Deady and Paula K O’Brien The Starling Song Project is a collaborative songwriting project with older people developed by Liz Clark through the Arts For Health Partnership Programme in eleven different healthcare settings across West Cork. Artists and participants share life and musical experiences, ideas and aspirations. Liz then introduces melody to the conversation and lyrics and musical compositions are formed. These songs celebrate a way of life that is disappearing, voiced by the people who experienced it. Tonight Liz is joined by three other singers on stage to bring four-part harmony and various instrumentation to these heartfelt pieces.
